Darryl E. R. Townsend

In Memorial

Darryl E. R. Townsend, 84, of Wellsboro, died on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at the Samaritan House.
He was born Jan. 31, 1932, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the son of the late Russell Edward and Mona J.E. (Whittal) Townsend. Darryl was the husband of Donna Gillespie whom he married on Oct. 30, 1973.
Darryl graduated from McGill University in 1955 with a MDCM Degree. He completed a three-year surgical residency at Montreal General Hospital and a two- year Ob-Gyn residency at Montreal General Hospital and Lewis Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Darryl also completed a year post doc research at Montreal General. He had a private practice in Montreal from 1960 to 1969. Darryl was assistant professor at Temple University School of Medicine from 1969 to 1973. He was Professor/Head of Gynecology – Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine, Chicago from 1974 to 1982, and acting Department Head from 1978 to 1979. Darryl had a private practice in Wellsboro, from 1982 to 1993. He retired as a physician in December of 1993.
Darryl was a member of Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons, American College of OB-GYN and Train Collectors Association (TCA). He was a lifelong builder of scale locomotives under the name of Town Models and Leetown.
In addition to his wife, Donna, Darryl is survived by four daughters, Suzanne Martinez (Jesse) of Orland Hills, Ill.; Elizabeth Townsend (Dan Shirley) of Madison, Wis.; Catherine Trainor (Joe) of Beverly, Mass., Carolyn Molitor (Don) of Broomfield, Colo.; eight grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ann-Marie Townsend of Montreal; two special friends, Bucky Green of Cherry Flats and Stan Dragovich of Wellsboro. Darryl was predeceased by his brother, Paul A. R. Townsend.
Donations in Darryl’s name may be made to the Samaritan House, 3 Morgan Terrace, Wellsboro, Pa. 16901.
