“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8.
Calvin A. Wolfgang died on May 5, 2025, at Lutheran Community at Telford, Telford, PA, where he had been a resident at Shepherd’s Way since August 2022.
Cal was born in Ashland, PA on November 7, 1935 and was the son of the late Robert L. Wolfgang and Elizabeth E. Metzinger (née Boyer). He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Lester P. Metzinger, as well as his older brother, Bobby. Cal was a proud Ashland “Black Diamond,” lettering in four varsity sports, serving as president of his junior and senior classes, and graduating from Ashland High School in 1953. As Cal liked to say, “You can take the boy out of the Coal Region, but you can’t take the Coal Region out of the boy!”
Cal attended East Stroudsburg State Teacher’s College (now University) and majored in health and physical education, graduating in 1957. While in college he was recognized by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as an all-star midfielder on the college soccer team. It was also at East Stroudsburg that Cal met the love of his life, M. Louise Rader, whom he married in August 1959. Cal attended Lancaster Theological Seminary and graduated in 1960. He was called in parish ministry to serve St. John’s United Church of Christ in Cattaraugus, NY and Old Zionsville United Church of Christ in Old Zionsville, PA. Cal then made a career change but continued to share his pastoral gifts throughout his life and this year he is being recognized by the Penn Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ for 65 years of ministry.
In 1968, Cal decided to become a physical therapist. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency at Abington Hospital. Throughout his 35 years of physical therapy practice, Cal’s ministry continued as he attended to the needs of many geriatric, homebound and profoundly disabled patients. He practiced with the Post Group in Lansdale, PA and later had his own practice, including contracts with visiting nurses’ associations and nursing homes throughout Bucks and Montgomery Counties.
Cal was known for his powerful tenor voice and was an active member of the Chancel Choir at Pleasantville United Church of Christ, Chalfont, PA. A 55-year member of the congregation, Cal volunteered in numerous capacities including church musicals, youth activities, fairs, Sunday school and committees. In his spare time he was a competitive tennis player and avid golfer.
Cal is survived by Louise, his wife of over 65 years, and two sons, Jonathan (Gail) of Pipersville, PA and Jayson (Louise) of Mechanicsburg, PA, as well as four grandchildren: Rachel (Charlie) of London, England; Amanda of Quincy, MA; Ryan (Lydia) of Holly Springs, NC; and Jeremy of Augusta, ME. Among the many gifts of Cal’s life, he officiated at the weddings of his two sons and baptized each of his four grandchildren.
A celebration of Cal’s life will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025 at Pleasantville United Church of Christ, 3424 Limekiln Pike, Chalfont, PA 18914. Visitation with the family will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the service at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Cal’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/.
