Gladys Braswell Fortney, 55, a long time resident of Scranton, died Friday November 16, 2018 at home after her courageous 4.5 year battle with lung cancer.
Born in the Bronx, NY daughter of the late Velmon and Gloria Bowden Braswell she was educated in New York City Public Schools and a Brooklyn, NY native. She was a veteran of the United States Army and worked as a supervisor with Aramark at the University of Scranton for 17 years. She enjoyed cooking and dancing and always made individuals feel at home in her presence.
Surviving are daughters Ihyisha Simms, Ny-Asia and My-Asia Owens (fiancee Charles Peters); sisters Claudia Melville, Wilhelmina Braswell and Linda Braswell; brothers Velmon Braswell, Jr. and Nathaniel Braswell; grandchildren Julian Peters, Aali Muhammad, Jaylah Peters and Onyx Muhammad; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and godchildren.
She was preceded in death by sisters Carolyn Braswell and Patricia Hunt and a brother Allen Braswell.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Wilkes Barre VA Hospital Oncology Department, Dr. Peters of Northeast Radiation Oncology, Compassionate Care hospice and Lung Cancer Alliance of NEPA.
A celebration of life for Gladys Braswell Fortney will be held on Sunday December 2, 2018 at the St. Mary’s Center.

Repass: 3pm-6pm

I stopped at the house but no one was home. I am so sorry about Gladys – she was a delightful and intelligent woman. Many of our rides to treatment were interesting talks.
She loved all of you, especially the “grand babies”!
